SIGNED DISTANCE FUNCTIONS

General Concept

For years, the industry has relied on the use of implicit modelling. GEOREKA aims to redefine this concept by leveraging the power of Signed Distance Functions (SDFs). SDFs are a long existing concept representing a large class of (implicit) functions, including the RBFs normally used for implicit modelling.

GEOREKA has embraced an innovative solution that revolutionizes implicit modelling by using SDFs flexibly. This integration goes beyond traditional techniques, providing users with advanced capabilities and improved accuracy in modelling geological features through the use of Machine Learning (ML) among others.

You can learn more in our SDF blog post, where we aimed to shift readers’ perspective on what modeling can achieve.

Benefits

Speed Improvements

The adoption of SDFs in GEOREKA brings significant benefits. The implicit removal of redundant points enabled by ML techniques, leads to tremendous speed improvements in both the training (fitting) process and subsequent evaluations. Comparisons with traditional implicit modelling interpolation methods demonstrated speed boosts of up to 100 times when employing ML classification techniques.

Enhanced Accuracy and Realistic Representations

SDFs provide precise definition of domain boundaries at any resolution and are not depending on triangle or block sizes, resulting in improved accuracy in geological modelling. You can now create detailed localized models at any scale, enhancing decision-making and resource management.

Iterative Adjustments

Another key advantage of SDFs is the ability to adjust SDFs globally or locally without committing to building a full model at every step. Building models becomes an exercise in adjusting and combining SDFs, empowering users to fine-tune their models with precision.

Flexibility and User Control

SDFs provide users with enormous flexibility to create their models. You can easily manipulate domain boundaries, accommodating complex geological scenarios and variations in data. This flexibility allows for accurate and customized representations, to gain deeper insights and provide more user control.

Integration of existing models

Through the use of SDFs, existing models (solids and surfaces) can be directly integrated into the implicit modelling workflow. This means existing models can be converted into an implicit representation and be directly integrated with SDFs from ML techniques or conventional implicit modelling.

Overall, geologists and miners can leverage this innovative solution to elevate geological modelling capabilities, drive progress in the field, and make informed decisions more quickly. GEOREKA’s utilization of SDFs showcases its commitment to advancing the field of geological modelling and revolutionizing the approach.
